Tools and Supplies You'll Need

You can install Faux Panels easily using tools found in almost everyone's toolbox. To complete your project you will at least need these basic tools:

  1. Great Stuff Pro Wall & Floor Adhesive
  2. Applicator Gun
  3. Great Stuff Pro Gun Cleaner (optional)
  4. Gloves
  5. Construction adhesive/glue — we recommend either PL® Premium Construction Adhesive, PL® Premium Advanced 8X Construction Adhesive (which has 8x faster bonding)
  6. A saw for cutting panels – a circular saw, jig saw, band saw, table saw, or hand saw, it is your preference. Any woodcutting blade used with these saws work great and cut smooth and easy.
  7. Tape Measure
  8. Level
  9. Water Misting Bottle
  10. Caulking gun for applying the PL adhesive and caulk.
  11. Chalk Line (optional)
  12. FauxPanels® color coordinated textured caulk
  13. Touch-up Kit (if available for the FauxPanels being installed)

Directions:

These are instructions for how to Install FauxPanels® on metal.

1.) Important:Make sure the surface is completely clean and dry before next step. Also make sure to remove any and all protruding obstructions from the surface.

2.) If the surface is flat, apply a bead of adhesive/glue to the perimeter of the back of the faux stone face, roughly an inch from the edge. Please note that while PL Premium Fast Grab 8X polyurethane is a viable adhesive for metals, either mechanical fasteners or some viable support is necessary for the first 24 hours while the adhesive cures.

Continue to add additional adhesive/glue to the rest of the panel back in a vertical straight line pattern. Keep the beads of glue/adhesive only 4 inches apart or less

Application: Apply adhesive to one surface of the material being bonded. Press the surfaces firmly together. Materials may be repositioned within 20 minutes after apply the adhesive. If bonding two non-porus surfaces (such as foam, metal, or fiber glass), add water in the form of a very light or atomized spray from a plant mister bottle to the extruded adhesive. The repositioning time will then be reduced to less than 15 minutes. Use mechanical support for 24 hours while the adhesive cures.

3.) If the surface is corrugated, then use an ample amount of PL construction adhesive on each convex portion of the surface. Apply the adhesive vertically in a tight zigzag pattern on each raised metal section of the surface. Again, please follow the instructions on the PL cartridge

Also please note the following from the Manufacturer's Specifications:

Application: Apply adhesive to one surface of the material being bonded. Press the surfaces firmly together. Materials may be repositioned within 20 minutes after apply the adhesive. If bonding two non-porus surfaces (such as foam, metal, or fiber glass), add water in the form of a very light or atomized spray from a plant mister bottle to the extruded adhesive. The repositioning time will then be reduced to less than 15 minutes. Use mechanical support for 24 hours while the adhesive cures.

4.) Apply the FauxPanel to the wall. Use a slight twisting motion to ensure good contact between the adhesive/glue and the wall for proper panel installation. Make sure the panel is level

5.) Add adhesive to the lip of the faux panel where the next panel will overlap, about 1 inch away from the textured surface of the panel.

6.) Add textured caulk to the seam where the panels meet. This is very important to ensure a weather-tight seal. The last two steps help maintain the integrity of the panel installation by preventing any possible flexing or separation of the product due to extreme temperature and humidity changes once the installation is complete

7.) Use mechanical fasteners such as self-drilling metal screws around the perimiter of out panels. Space out the screws 8" along the perimeter on the panel. Use one screw per suqare foot throught the panel. This will help the panel move with the metal surface when it expands and contracts with temperature swings.

8.) Now repeat the above steps for the next faux panel to be installed. Place it onto the wall next to the first panel. Keep the panel level. Press the panels tightly against the wall with a slight wiggle motion to help spread the glue for a tight seal. Install the panels very closely against the first faux stone panel, as they may expand and contract with the temperatures changes. Continue repeating the above steps until the first row is complete.

9.) Use a damp cloth to remove any excess textured caulk before it dries. A wet finger, paint brush, or other similar tool can assist in smoothing and blending the caulk. Also use the textured caulk to fill in any voids, gaps, or spaces. Click here for more details on caulking panels.

10.) If you are installing multiple rows of FauxPanels, start on the next row above the one just completed. Repeat the previous steps for the next row of panels to be installed.

Note: The panels are designed to butt up to each other bottom to top. This 'shiplap' joint should be glued and caulked as described above to ensure a tight seal and seamless look. for a more random look, offset each row by a half sheet (approximately). This will make patten repeats and any seams look less noticeable.

11.) Using the paint from the Touch-up Kit, paint the faux Panels and textured caulk as needed (when applicable, not all panels require Touch Up Paint. If it is required, it will be under the accessories tab).

Tips:To ensure that the panels are oriented properly- the tongue portion of the panel is on top of the panel, and the groove portion of the panel is on the bottom. All joints, incllufing miters, should be glued and caulked. The panels may require additional shimming and trimming for proper alignment.

MAKE SURE to observe and obey all safety rules and recommendations set forth by tool manufacturers and local, state, and federal authorities for any building project including all applicable building codes.
